An A/W womenswear collection for those who break stereotypical boundaries and live on the road, free from societies’ conformities. It offers a place of inclusion in a world filled with exclusion. The collection is a montage of 1960s biker subculture, the role of women in biker gangs, and the Botswana Renegades, a group of biker cowboys breaking archetypes surrounding ethnicity, cultural identities and ideologies. It delves into the biker wear silhouettes, protective wear and accentuating the female form through pattern cutting and adjusting seam lines, highlighting areas all over the body. It takes inspiration from how bikers embrace an ideology of everyday escape and adventure within their community and create their own look by customising their clothing. The biker’s culture of self-expression led me to using hand embellishment, heavily customising each garment with religious symbolism applique, highly popular in the biker community. The collection seeks to empower women in the message of the sacred heart: To love thyself and to recognise the flames symbolising the divine light of love.
