Considering the recognised rules to aesthetics, I like my paintings to exist within an individualist ideology. From a personal gravitation towards contrast and abundance, I create new settings for my subjects, thus providing questions of cultural expectations and perceived gender specifics surrounding the space.
I have a particular interest in working with community groups, where the relationship between subject and artist is developed over months and with a great reciprocal appreciation. This process of introducing community groups into the development of paintings is a collaboration whereby the finished paintings are not a conclusion, but a continuation of the relationship built.
This current project began in February 2019 and is the result of time spent with a men’s group from inner city Dublin. Through the process of photography and collaging, my goal is to create optimistic and energetic paintings for both the subject and the viewer.
