Journey – Documenting the route between Drogheda and NCAD

The sights, sounds and rhythms encountered while travelling on public transport between Drogheda and NCAD form the basis for this work. The emotional and sensory impact of travelling between the domestic intimacy of home and the creative domain of the college is explored. Initially, the motion of buses was used to generate a visualisation of the journey. An investigation of the resulting textures and contours leads to charting ideas of identity and individuality. Experimentation with a variety of techniques and materials uncovers encoded meanings as found in a strand of hair or DNA. The process leads to the creation of convoluted coils of silk and steel which embody the essence of this artistic and personal journey.
