My work focuses on various abandoned structures around Ireland. This untitled series of paintings centres around three buildings in particular: Rockfield House, Windgate’s House and Duckett’s Grove.
The photographs I have taken whilst visiting these buildings, show objects from the past and their physical structures beginning to fade in colour and essence as a result of being exposed to the elements, as well as the absence of human interaction. I used these photographs as the main source for my paintings. Having been completely disregarded, these buildings are frozen from the time they were abandoned and act as time capsules. However, as they stand dormant they slowly reintegrate into their surrounding environment, becoming overwhelmed by nature and the passing of time.
My paintings are composed of a range of colours which reflect the contrast between the colours made from the buildings exposure to the elements since being abandoned, and those that remain from the original decor. Through painting, I am attempting to instil a new sense of life into the forgotten and uninhabited through an exploration of colour.
