When starting this project, I began with the theme of ‘Space’. Space is defined as a continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied. However, I wanted to look at what space is occupied by, what connects space and our movements and the patterns within it.
There is pattern and repetition found everywhere in natural spaces – the cyclical and repetitive pattern of an ocean wave, the rising and setting of the sun. I found I was drawn to images of the sea, waves, the sun and the moon. I wanted to explore a relationship with nature through water, how we turn to water for a sense of calm and clarity. Collectively we have assigned healing and trans-formative properties to water.
We have an affinity for water which is reflected in a near-universal attraction to the colour blue. Blue is often associated with qualities like calm, openness, depth and wisdom.
