'Ah You'll Grow Into It' is a study of hand-me-down clothing reminiscent of my childhood. As the youngest of five siblings, hand-me-downs were a regular occurrence throughout my childhood and a milestone in my upbringing, which I hold very close to my heart.
I believe how we interact with second hand clothing as children has a significant impact in later life, and to our approach to clothing in which we can re work/ re wear.
In order to retrieve as much information as possible for my degree, an experiment was conducted with two families of children playing with 'handed down' items. It was evident that one child played with the clothing in the most imaginative way possible and concluded that clothing can become something it is not, or something wonderful again. As a child, this was vital in my understanding of appreciating everything we have to be grateful for.
Research for this collection was based on handed down items such as clothing which were photographed, sampled and taken apart. Through fabric choices, I have shown the delicate identity of childhood. Along with this I have attempted to highlight the tangle or ruched pathway a child may face growing up with hand me downs.
