Many of us who went to a Catholic primary school in Ireland have had our own experiences and stories. While it may have been a positive time for some, others might feel different and perhaps want to forget this particular period in their lives. Through video, sound and photography, I explore ideas of social conformity and discipline within the school building, while also examining the relationship between the individual and the infrastructure.
An almost absent atmosphere is created in a rural derelict Catholic primary school which closed in 1998. This derelict space taps into the collective experience of generations and exhibits a space in which the viewer can reflect on their personal perceptions of this educational setting. The photographs of the faceless woman wandering, looking lost in the Irish landscape, represents the social isolation and exclusion that may be felt during this time.
