Haptic ‘the perception of objects by touch’

Materials with their endless possibilities and connections have a magnetic attraction for me with sewing and painting at their heart. A running stitch draws over new cloth, scissors slice shapes from fabric and canvas stretches waiting for new painterly marks. Skills of making, painting and sewing are entwined, a complimentary process guided by your haptic sense and I am excited when my hands discover new things not stored in my memory bank.
My work is driven by the tactile qualities of paint and fabrics by exploring materials through the practice of painting. Before painting I use photography and drawing as a physical thinking tool, gathering source information for the progression of work. After the initial marks on a surface the feel of painting guides the process suggesting materials in response to the piece I’m working on. It’s a puzzle, a conversation with myself that doesn’t always find an answer.
