Hair projects a huge sense of our identity and is intrinsically linked to our personalities. The ways in which we present and manipulate our hair and the ritualistic nature of getting our hair done plays a central and dynamic role within self expression. Whatever is done to it, it is gradually and ceaselessly renewed at the roots with time.
Hair is a hair professionals’ canvas, it is the medium with which they create, shape and form. The hairdressers/ barbers is a space where craft meets science and humanity and where the process is a transformative one. Presented in the form of a poster, a moving image piece, and a publication, my work aims to capture the beautiful connections between hair professional and client, and to encapsulate the feelings and conversations that take place in the barbers/ hair salon, while highlighting themes of space and community.
