My project examines the fantasy surrounding fictional and two dimensional female characters in Japanese culture, from ‘Lolita complexes’, to doll culture, and the way in which female characters are portrayed and received by their male audience. My pieces are based on sex dolls and their increasing popularity. It also examines Japan's current birth rate crisis and how the cultures’ extensive relationship replacement services play into it; Kawaii culture and fetishised innocence and how it is projected onto pubescent female characters; and the terminology that is used by Otaku men in order to describe the looks, actions, personalities and media of their beloved fictional female characters.
