Water and Motion

This work is an exploration of the forces that influence and interact with water and the ocean. This includes weather fronts, storms, ocean swells, winds, gravity and tides. My interest in the perpetual and ever changing motion of the sea is borne out of my grá for County Mayo and from my passion for surfing. I combine different methods of working around the central themes of water and movement. These include water and ink transfers – intended to create a natural feeling and sense of water on the page – combined with marks from weather forecasting models, diagrams of wave formations, bursts from ink bubbles and surfing imagery. The elements are employed directly through the use of seawater as a medium and by weathering pieces in the rain, while the qualities of water are emphasised using absorbent and transparent materials.
