‘Ishara’, Hittite blood is one of the earliest words we have for the substance inside us all. Interestingly, the word shares a root with two other words; those for oath and bond.
Blood, we say, is thicker than water. It’s been used to start wars, to move whole groups of people from one corner of the world to another. And it’s been used to form bonds, to seal oaths. We speak of bad blood and blood brothers, a blood feud and killing in cold blood, blood-curdling and getting blood out of a stone, and the blood of Christ.
Why does blood fascinate, and repel, us? Through various outcomes, I explore these questions and more. In some, the viewer is passive, and in others they are forced to take an active role. But always, that question remains; we all have blood, but how much have we actually thought about it?
