On. Off. On. Off. On. Off. On. Off.
Agnes Szarota's work focuses on the topic of mental illness, anxiety and panic. This project revolves around the seeking of a visual representation of the feeling of panic. The artist works through a process of performance art, photography and digital drawing. Using self-portraiture as the main element of her work, Szarota creates an experience that is entirely personal and representative of her own thoughts and emotions, yet still accessible to a wide audience.
Through the use of intimate and raw imagery, her own face acts as a platform for these emotions to speak to the viewer. The bright, colourful nature of the work purposefully contrasts her dark theme and acts as a way to bring attention to the issue as well as to normalise it.
The title ‘Predisposed Panic’ hints at the generational depression and anxieties that can be carried in families and relates to the deep roots that panic usually carries.
