My practice focuses on reimaging toys as Gothic fantasy characters of my own design. A cast of these characters inhabit my monotone pencil drawings. To give context to my work, I have included a paragraph below that details a backstory for these characters and the world they inhabit.
A healthy imagination can manifest the creation of imaginary friends or personified objects, like stuffed animals or dolls. These cherished toys are inanimate representations of living creatures who have had identities and personalities projected onto them.
What happens to these mannerisms when a toy is broken, lost, abandoned, or forgotten? Do our lost toys have some inherent memory of their past lives? Do they linger on in a purgatory beyond our reach? Could they evolve into something with a life of its own?
